Alfred University was founded in 1836 by liberal, independent thinkers who placed high value on education for all citizens. Today, the University has retained and built upon the strong values of its founders, developing as an institution of national and international renown that is responsive to the needs of contemporary society while remaining consistent with the spirit of its origins.
Alfred University is the second oldest co-educational college in the United States and one of the earliest nineteenth century colleges to have enrolled African American and Native American students. Over the course of the twentieth century, Alfred evolved into a complex institution offering a full range of programs in the liberal arts and sciences, art and design, engineering, business, education, and school psychology.
Alfred University offers talented, engaged and engaging professors who love to teach, whose goal is to inspire in their students with creativity and a spirit of inquiry. In other words, they’ll inspire you, just as you inspire them. Lots of places will tell you “you won’t just be a number.” At Alfred, professors will not only know your name, but they’ll know you as a person -- who your friends are; what sports you play; what clubs you belong to. And you will know them, too. You’ll see that after classes, as volunteers with ambulance corps or members of the village board; you’ll see them at dinner with their families; or performing with you in the orchestra or choir.
Alfred University also offers graduate studies in business administration, education, engineering, fine arts, school counseling and school psychology.

At the start, first-year students live together in their own halls, and often make friendships there that last a lifetime. Alfred University is a residential living and learning community. Students are required to live on campus for their first, sophomore and junior years. All of our residence halls are co-ed. Some of the halls alternate female/male by floors, while others alternate by room.
Living arrangements range from traditional, corridor-style residence halls to suites and apartments for small groups of residents. Single rooms are available to both new and upper-class students on a limited basis. Common Interest Housing (CIH)—special housing based on student interests--is also available to upper-class students. There are also special interest houses, including Hillel, Environmental Studies, Honors, the Language House, International House, and Joel's House in which students may live.
