Established in 1908, James Madison University (JMU) offers Bachelors', Masters' and doctoral programs with its primary emphasis on the undergraduate student. A JMU education provides a broad range of the liberal arts, extensive professional and pre-professional programs, and a multitude of learning experiences outside the classroom. JMU has 17,000 students from over 70 countries and is located in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
JMU's undergraduate Business School is ranked in the top 5% in the USA by BusinessWeek magazine. The University is ranked 22nd overall in value for money at public colleges and universities in the USA, according to Kiplinger Magazine. And the campus food has also gained national recognition, placed at number 5 for "great campus food" based on student surveys in the Princeton Review's most recent annual college guide.
At JMU, there is an incredibly high level of student involvement in the classroom, the lab and activities around and off campus. The amount of undergraduate research in the sciences has been cited as peerless. Internships are an integral part of the curriculum. All this adds up to an education that offers students an opportunity to apply what they learn. A 17-1 student-to-professor ratio and an average class size of 29 promote the strong relationships found between JMU professors and students.
International students MUST first complete the on-campus ESL Transition program before enrollment on an undergraduate or graduate program at James Madison University.
Note: Completion of the ESL Transition program is required before you can enroll into a Bachelor's degree at JMU.
After completion of the ESL transition program, international students can join more than 100 innovative and traditional majors including Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, Finance, International Business, Media Arts and Design, and Nursing.
All students, regardless of major, participate in a liberal arts core curriculum called general education, through which they develop a foundation for learning and explore the academic offerings open to them for their college careers. In addition, employers are consulted to identify the areas and skills they seek, and then JMU faculty incorporate these skills into the curriculum.
The School of Music is nationally renowned and features degrees in music composition, performance, education, theater, and music industry. Currently, the University is home to a Wind Ensemble, The JMU Brass Band, a Pep Band, several choirs, and The Marching Royal Dukes, a marching band with almost 500 members.
