Founded in 1890, Pacific Lutheran University is ranked the 12th best Masters-level University in western region of the United States, by US News & World Report's "Best Colleges 2009". The University's academic distinction has also been consistently documented by Peterson's Competitive Colleges. Located in suburban parkland in the state of Washington, PLU has a picturesque 126-acre campus truly representative of the natural grandeur of the Pacific Northwest. The beautiful and tranquil setting of mountains, water, and forest is complemented by the Seattle/Tacoma metropolitan area, long rated among the country's most desirable places to live.
Pacific Lutheran University offers a choice of over thirty majors, including wide range of natural and social sciences, computer studies, business, education, art, music, theater, and interdisciplinary programs. There is also a strong graduate program, with an AACSB accredited MBA program.
Pacific Lutheran University offers an ESL Transition program on campus, for students who do not have the required English proficiency for direct entry to a degree.
PLU's liberal arts and professional programs give you more choices than you will find at a small college and more personal attention than you will find at a large public school.
Studying the liberal arts - such as psychology, history, the natural sciences - at PLU will prepare you for a lifetime of success in a rapidly changing and highly competitive world. You'll gain skills in decision making, analysis, communication and reasoning. While the University's fully accredited professional programs in business, education, nursing, physical education and social work prepare you for your future career. PLU is committed to giving you a global view of the world, providing a strong and supportive community, and doing so in a way that prepares you for life.

PLU has long been known as a sports powerhouse. The football team has won four national titles, and more than 400 Lutes in all sports have been named first-team NCAA All-Americans. Given all this success, the fact that our student-athletes are exactly that – students and athletes – is something of which we are very proud. Those who wear a Lutes jersey know that when they come to PLU, they will not only play on some great teams – they get a great education, too.
But you don’t have to be a varsity athlete to play at PLU. In fact, we encourage students to try something new – it’s part of our belief that the best education includes challenging your mind and body. So, suit up with the varsity teams, learn a new club sport such as ultimate Frisbee or lacrosse, or join up with your friends as part of the Intramural Sports or Outdoor Recreation programs.
The PLU campus offers an auditorium, concert hall, fitness center, two gyms, golf course, multi-purpose complex with gym, racquetball courts and dance studio, student center (media complex, games room), swimming pool, tennis courts, W.M. Keck Observatory, wilderness preserve (6 acres). The library features more than 500,000 periodicals and the main computer suite has both PCs and Macs for student use. There are more than 60 clubs and organizations, intercollegiate and intramural sports, music and concerts, theater group, literary magazine, orchestra, student-run newspaper, student-run TV and radio station.
PLU offers residence halls that have their own individual character. Most are coed living and include kitchens on most floors, laundry facilities, study and TV lounges, two students to a room, telephone with voicemail, Internet connection and cable TV access. Halls also have indoor bike storage, postal delivery and pick-up, and vending machines.
PLU is located in the Pacific Northwest. In PLU’s Parkland neighborhood, you’ll hardly have to step foot off campus to eat at some of Tacoma’s best restaurants or grab a quick slice of pizza. Walk down Garfield Street with your friends to browse through used CDs or to get a jolt at the Northern Pacific Coffee Company before you hit the books.
PLU is also just minutes away from downtown Tacoma and the world famous Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Art Museum and the Washington State History Museum. The short drive to Seattle means you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy big-city entertainment like the Experience Music Project or major league ballgames at beautiful Safeco Field. And given that the Seattle-Tacoma area is situated on the vibrant and culturally diverse Pacific Rim, there is no shortage of opportunities – from tracking down Asian cuisine and cultural delights to starting an internship at a global trading company. It’s all here for you.
